It’s been a tough year and, on this Thanksgiving Day, it could be a challenge to find things to be thankful for!
I suspect that everyone’s life looks a little different right now than it usually does. In fact, it would be easy to sink into what my mom calls the “mully grubs”.
Yet, numerous studies have found that thankfulness is good for both your emotional and physical health!
Just give it a google! You’ll find that gratitude leads to better sleep, less depression, lowered blood pressure and a whole plethora of other benefits.
So, how does one manufacture gratitude when things look a bit bleak?
For me, it’s as easy as ABC.
Literally!
A couple years ago, when going through a particularly trying time in my life, I had an epiphany. I took out a piece of paper and wrote down each letter of the alphabet. Then, I sat until I was able to write something I was thankful for that began with each letter.
To say the least, this little exercise stretched me mentally!
As I wrote out my lists, week after week, I was surprised at things that I was thankful for! Zebras and xylophones were frequent fliers on my list. But, I was surprised by how many different things I had to be thankful for!
I began to look forward to filling out the ABC’s of gratitude! These simple lists changed my attitude! They turned my mind from the overwhelming negatives, which I was genuinely experiencing at that time, toward the many positives in my life!
So, as we celebrate Thanksgiving I challenge you to write out your ABC’s!
You might be surprised how many things you actually have to be thankful for!
