My family loves homemade applesauce and, although it’s a bit labor intensive, it’s incredibly easy to make!
Quite often, I visit my local orchard and buy apples for this yummy treat but, this year, my apple tree produced more than enough apples for a crock-pot full of apple yumminess….and a pie to boot!
Here’s what you’ll need to make a bowl of saucy deliciousness
- Apples of your choosing. Often, I buy apples at my local orchard but, this year, my golden delicious tree produced a good quantity of apples and I used them. Some people are a bit picky about apple type when they cook with apples. I am not such a cook….I’ll make sauce out of whatever I have!
- In my opinion, you need at least 1/2 peck (approximately 5lbs) of apples to make it worth your time to make applesauce. I don’t know precisely how many apples I processed for this batch but it was around 10lbs which made a very full crockpot full of sauce
- A Pampered Chef apple corer peeler or, alternatively, a knife and peeler. If you plan to process much more than 5lbs of apples you will find the apple corer peeler to be quite handy. However, if you don’t have one there’s no reason to run out and buy one for your first try at apple processing because you can probably bother one from Grandma, an elderly neighbor lady, or some nice lady at church!
- A crock pot to cook the apples
- A potato masher or immersion blender…whichever you have on hand.
Making the actual sauce is easy peasy
- Peel and Core the apples
- Slice them if you didn’t use and apple corer peeler
- Put sliced apples into a crockpot
- Add a small amount of apple juice (or water) to the pot
- Cook on low for several hours, until the apples are tender
- Smash the apples
- Add a small amount of brown (or white) sugar. I used approximately two tablespoons in this VERY FULL pot of sauce
- Add cinnamon to taste
- Eat it up!!!
My family loves to eat it straight from the crockpot, topped with whipped cream! Crumble a few graham crackers in it and it’s even better…..a pie without the crust.
